NJ Aid for Animals Highlights of the Year – 2007

NJAFA is the only non-profit rescue with no paid staff that travels to Camden City on a weekly basis to spay and neuter dogs and cats for the residents for free, deliver food, pick up surrendered animals and “aid” owned animals that may need help. NJAFA reports abuse and more importantly, we report everyone, no matter who they are, without fear of retribution and follow it through to prosecution with follow up phone calls to court, letters and constructing the cases we report for NJSPCA, i.e,writing the reports, collecting evidence, etc.

In 2007 (and its not over yet) we were responsible for spaying and/or neutering over 200 dogs and cats; placed 18 puppies, 15 adult dogs and (by working with a cat rescue group) 22 cats and kittens and by working with other no kill rescues many dogs that were surrendered we did not have space for.

JANUARY 1, 2007 – NOVEMBER, 2007-

New Year’s Day, NJAFA was already at work in Camden. We had two hours to remove five cats from a dead woman’s house where NJAFA had helped in the past. Otherwise, family would take cats to local shelter. All but one of the cats were placed in loving homes. “Misty” is the only cat remaining from the apartment in Camden. She is now NJAFA’s official Camden Cat;

Lola, a pit bull at a local high kill shelter, cannot stay there because she has been bitten by “an unknown source” and needs a place to stay for SIX MONTH while being quarantined. NJAFA takes her in and finds her safe harbor for six months and pays for surgery on her leg for $l600.00. Lola finds her forever home with her trainer in September;

Coco, a pregnant dog chained to her doghouse gives birth in frigid temps. We purchase the puppies from owner and report individual to NJSPCA. President, Kathy McGuire, builds the case, which results in charges against individual. Over $1500 is spent trying to save the nine puppies that died. Five pups that survived are placed in loving homes and Coco is returned to owner (spayed). NJAFA President attends first trial against Robert McCan;

Received a call about a pit bull abandoned in Camden City. Owner flown to North Jersey dying of AIDS and family does not want the dog. NJAFA President arranges for “Cha Cha” to be pulled via faxes from hospital to animal control and finds safe harbor for Cha Cha. A loving pit-bull but with medical issues she receives help from a generous benefactor who pays for her mammary tumors and spay.Cha Cha’s benefactor and Kathy McGuire drive to New York to take Cha Cha to rescue and she finds a permanent home in Vermont living on 33 acres and travelling the U.S. with her new owners;

Assisted an elderly woman in Camden City by taking three seriously ill kittens from her home, which she could not afford to help. One spent five days in intensive care but all three found loving homes. We continue to work with our elderly angel in Camden while she offers us home made soups on our visits;

Conceived and implemented a successful fundraiser, Mardi Paw, and donated $300 to a rescue group in New Orleans in the 9th district who helped with Katrina dogs. Through NJAFA ( by working with partners at another shelter) this rescue was able to bring three Katrina dogs here that would have never gotten adopted in New Orleans.
"Out In Jersey" Magazine
NJ Aid for Animals featured in "Out In Jersey" Magazine. Pick up the December issue of OUT IN JERSEY and read the story about Cha Cha the pit bull on page 21 called "One Lucky Girl" by Mike Kellerman.  Thanks to the editor for picking up and publishing this great story.  You can read her story of success on our website under "success stories".  There is a beautiful picture of her lying by the fireplace at her 33 acre home in Vermont
