The puppy that almost wasn't.
Plucked from a gas chamber in Georgia just minutes before she was
to be gassed (her mother and siblings were gassed before her),
Penelope now known as "Gracie" has a new home with a wonderful
family in Margate.
Thanks to one of our sponsors
Cookie from Steve and Cookie's By the Bay, (pictured above on
right) and her referral to a friend of hers, Gracie is now living
in the lap of luxury with a loving family!
"Gracie" is now living in Margate
in a beautiful home with FIVE BEDS of her own (one in every
bedroom) and two different colored leashes. One for Daddy to take
her out and one for her Mommy to take her on.
She has been totally housebroken
and graduated from Puppy School at Absolute Control Dog Training.
Thanks to our wonderful friends at Absolute Control Dog Training
and their continuous support in our efforts to save "one animal at
a time".
Her graduation picture is below

UPDATE TO
GASSING INFORMATION ABOUT CLAYTON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL, GEORGIA
In
Georgia, if a facility was using gas prior to August, 1990, then
they are "grandfathered" in, and the "no gassing" law does not
apply. That is the case in Clayton County where little Penelope
was saved and where they continue to gas dogs. Please see the
video below which shows how they are gassed.

UPDATE ON PENNY!!!
Here is our adorable little
Penny all set for her new home. She will be ready after Christmas
when she returns from
Puppy
Training School with our good friends at Animal Control Dog Training
in Southampton, NJ
MEET LITTLE
PENELOPE! Ten week old boxer puppy literally saved
from the gas chamber by minutes! This is from a friend of the President of NJAFA who happened to be in GA last week. She was desperate to find
a home for this little girl. The animal control where this poor
little girl was taken is Clayton Co. Animal Control. The worst part
is my friend had to PAY the animal control $75 for EACH one that was
being gassed! We are taking donations for her eye which will require
a specialist. Cherry is now with NJAFA and we will be looking for a
home for her. She is very very sweet, loves other dogs and is
a very calm little dog.
Hi, Do you know anyone who is looking
for a really sweet, boxer x female -about l0 weeks old? I was in
GA for a week and just got back this morning. Yesterday, I went
to one of the shelters there that still use gas. I can not
believe how incredibly bad this shelter was!!!! The facility
uses prisoners to care for the animals. The shelter was mostly
filled with some really nice pits which were not available for
adoption except by rescue. I saw a dump truck that picked up a
huge pile of trash bags in which the dead
dogs were put in. So
sad. I saw the little boxer crammed in a little kennel filled
with urine and feces. She had given up and was so hopeless and
dejected. They were going to gas her that day. I just could not
let that happen, so grabbed her and another little tiny -maybe 6
weeks old male puppy they were also going to gas. The girl is so
incredibly sweet and now so happy and grateful to be out of that
shelter. She does have cherry eye. JoAnn

PETA just learned
that the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and its
commissioner, Tommy Irvin, have been found in contempt of court
by Judge Tom Campbell of Fulton County Superior Court. This
ruling comes after a more than seven-month legal battle that
began when PETA received reports that dogs and cats were being
cruelly and illegally gassed to death by various pounds and
shelters in Georgia and that the Georgia Department of
Agriculture was not upholding a 17-year-old law, the 1990 Humane
Euthanasia Act
The lawsuit was filed by Law firm Schiff Hardin LLP in Atlanta on
behalf of two plaintiffs: a former Clayton County Humane Society
employee—whose dog was hit by a car and then killed in one of the gas
chambers—and former state representative Chesley Morton, who
introduced Georgia’s Humane Euthanasia Act in 1990. PETA sent a
cease-and-desist letter to Cobb County on April 5 requesting assurance
that the shelter would comply with the law, but the letter and
subsequent communications were simply ignored on the basis of a
"grandfather clause," which the county incorrectly claimed gave them
an exemption from using humane methods of euthanasia.
It is simply incredible that private citizens had to go to court to
get the department to abide by the very laws it is charged with
enforcing, but the recent announcement that the GDA is finally being
held accountable for their actions is a major victory, and hopefully
it will help to shed some light on the brazen disregard for the law
and for animal suffering that places like Cobb County have been
getting away with for years in a crude attempt to deal with the
cat-and-dog overpopulation crisis. Euthanasia is a tragic necessity
while 6-8 million animals are abandoned in shelters in the U.S. alone
every year and breeders continue to manufacture more for profit, but
unwanted animals discarded by society must be offered a dignified,
humane exit if death is the best we can offer them. There is no excuse
for employing inhumane methods which simply prolong and intensify the
suffering of these unwanted animals.
You can click
here to see footage (taken in Yadkin
County, North Carolina), which shows the horrific practice of using
carbon monoxide gas chambers to kill animals. The GDA has simply
ignored an act which prohibits this kind of "euthanasia" method in
contempt of the law and in a complete violation of the public trust.
NJAFA CONTACTED PETA 11/19/07...
Update from Peta Re: Gassing
NJAFA Contacted PETA a few days ago with the following letter:
The Clayton County Animal Control
Facility is still cruelly GASSING dogs (and other animals.) HSUS
says it is always unacceptable to use CO for the euthanasia of
dogs and cats who are: geriatric; under the age of four months;
sick or injured; or pregnant. In spite of this, the Clayton County
Animal Control Facility still gasses all the above. Please email
me if there is anything you can do about this horrific situation.
Thanks!
Thanks for your email. We are well aware of the situation in
Clayton County. Some shelters in Georgia continue to use gas
poisoning despite the law, and we are working hard to ensure that
the state's laws are enforced. Please see:
http://blog.peta.org/archives/euthanasia/ for more
information. If you have any further questions or concerns,
please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Emily Allen, PETA

Want to Keep Me With You and Not Die Alone
I will die in the GAS CHAMBER because I am no longer
wanted.
My name is "Lost Soul" and I'm a stray dog.
I'm starving, skinny and scared. I am l0 weeks old I
will be one of the "prisoners" at the Clayton County
Animal Control.
Most people will pass me by because of my emaciated
body and puppies carry Parvo so they put us down
first.
I know it's time for me to go to heaven and I accept
this.
I just wish I could die a peaceful death with a shot.
But no, I will die in the GAS CHAMBER.
I will be put in a box with many other dogs and locked
in.
I will be scared and start to cry.
I hope none of the other dogs get mad and start to
attack me which is very common in this situation.
I will start to breathe in the gas and I will feel my
eyes and mouth burn and I will start howling.
I will take my little nose and put it to the bottom of
the grate to try to catch some fresh air.
This isn't working, Oh God, Please Help, I can't
breathe!
I'm vomiting, dizzy and starting to black out and
convulse.
I hear the other "lost souls" scream and some blood is
splattered on me because I'm pawing to get out.. and I
cut the pads on my paws off. Oh My God this hurts and
I'm so scared!
I'm wondering why I have to die this way??
All I ever wanted was a family to love and warm lap to
sit on!!
Why do convicted murderers on death row get a shot,
but I have to die in a GAS CHAMBER?
I wish I could die with a shot, with a vet holding me
and rubbing my ear telling me everything will be okay.
I would die with some dignity and not defecate or
urinate on myself.
I better give in to the gas and go to heaven now, for
if I don't die, they will put me in the gas chamber
and do it again.
I can't wait to get to heaven and have all the angels
rub my belly and give me kisses.
